CHAPTER 15

TYPHOID MARY

Addy all but knocked me over when I stepped out from Smokey. The force of her contact pressed me back into the ship’s freezing cold hull, but I didn’t for a minute mind.

“You won! You won!” she managed between kisses.

The brain is a funny thing. I could still see the afterglow of the images implanted in my mind from the final moments of the race. There were several scenarios I’d contemplated and while one was winning, it wasn’t the lead idea.

Rough hands tugged at my arm and others slapped my back as many of the drivers from the pre-game drinking tent congratulated me, some expressing surprise, but all with unreserved joy at crowning a winner.

“That was a good move, getting back in the race, Hoffen,” Junior said.

The race results were posted, and Junior had taken third, one hundredth of a second behind the second-place winner I’d edged out. The total time between the three of us was only a hundred twenty-five milliseconds. It had been a ridiculously close race. It felt good to finally have an Unlimited race on the books.

“Quinn,” Olivia said, trying to get my attention as she interrupted an excited recounting of a particularly difficult set of turns one of the race legs. Reliving the crazy moments was one of the fun parts about racing and if not for our connection, I would have pushed through.

“Is everything okay, Liv?”

“Addy’s struggling. I need to take her back to Goldy,” she said.

My heart sank. Caught up in the post-race bliss, I’d ignored Addy’s weakened state.

“Shoot. I’ll go with you and clean up.” I said.

“No, Quinn, you stay,” Addy said, her face as much full of regret as it was exhaustion. “We can make it back to Goldy.”

“Nice try,” I said. “Hey guys, let’s meet in town in an hour or so at Tempe Inn. I’ll buy a round of drinks. I’ve got a couple of things I need to take care of.”

That was the right thing to say as a cheer went up was along with a fresh round of back claps and congratulations. I did my best to help the celebration move away from our little group and when it did, I moved Addy into Smokey’s chair where she could be more comfortable.

“That’s a lot better,” she said. “I can get myself home. Don’t worry about me.”

I struggled to keep from rolling my eyes. “We’ll sit on the airfoils and you can drive us back. I’d like a shower and a chance to hit the head. There was a lot of beer consumed before the race started.”

“Was that why you were in such a hurry?” Junior quipped, overhearing the conversation.

“Probably,” I laughed, sliding onto one of Smokey’s small wings. “Mush, you huskies!” I urged, miming cracking a whip once Cassius and Olivia were settled.

“He’s going to be tough to be around for a while, isn’t he?” Cassius asked, more loudly than needed.

“Hold on Addy,” Olivia said. Her tone warned of trouble, although I couldn’t initially find it.
